
As a teacher, it's not uncommon to revisit concepts from previous years, especially when teaching bottom-set groups. However, my recent experience with Year 9 science students showed me just how much foundational knowledge can slip through the cracks over time.

The lesson was focused on calculating the mean, a simple mathematical concept used to analyze data in science experiments. I began with a brief review, asking if the students remembered the definitions of mean, mode, median, and range from their earlier math lessons or previous school years. What I heard was surprising: not only did most students have little recollection of these concepts, but some couldn’t define them at all. A few remembered encountering them back in Year 7 or during math homework, but no one had a confident grasp of these terms.
Despite this, I quickly went over the definitions again and focused solely on calculating the mean. Initially, everything seemed to click. The students worked through a straightforward example and completed the first task quickly. Yet, when I introduced a real-world application—asking them to calculate the “mean length” of potato chips using data that included both lengths and masses—many students made the mistake of including the mass in their calculations.
This experience led me to reflect: Why do students struggle to retain and apply foundational concepts across subjects? And more importantly, how can we help them bridge the gap between subjects like math and science, where these skills are crucial?
The Disconnect: Why This Happens
Knowledge Silos: One of the key reasons for this gap is that subjects are often taught in isolation. Students learn about mean, mode, median, and range in math, but they rarely get opportunities to apply these concepts outside of that context. When they encounter them in science or other subjects, the connection between what they’ve learned and how to use it becomes less clear.
Lack of Reinforcement: Basic concepts like mean, mode, and median may be introduced early in a student’s academic journey, but if they aren’t revisited regularly, it’s easy for students to forget or become uncertain about them.
Abstract vs. Practical Application: While students may remember definitions in a theoretical context, applying them to real-world data—like calculating the mean length of potato chips—requires a higher level of understanding. This leap from theory to practice can be challenging, especially for lower-set students.
Solutions: How to Help Students Reconnect with Basic Concepts
As educators, there are several strategies we can use to reinforce these foundational skills and help students make cross-subject connections.
Cross-Curricular Collaboration: Working closely with math teachers can ensure that students see the relevance of mathematical concepts across subjects. For example, coordinating lessons where students use data in science to practice their math skills (like calculating mean or range) can reinforce the idea that these skills are transferable and essential in multiple contexts.
Frequent Review and Application: Regularly revisiting key concepts and giving students opportunities to practice them throughout the year, rather than just in isolated lessons, helps solidify their understanding. This can be done through quick starter activities or by integrating these skills into ongoing science investigations.
Real-World Scenarios: Engage students with relatable, hands-on tasks that require them to apply these mathematical skills in practical situations. This makes the learning process more tangible. For example, instead of abstract numbers, use examples from their environment (e.g., measuring plant growth, calculating average reaction times in a class experiment) to show how these calculations are meaningful.
Focused Feedback and Reflection: When students make errors like including irrelevant data in calculations, it’s essential to explore why they made the mistake. Was it a misunderstanding of the task, or are they unsure about which numbers to use? Use this as an opportunity for targeted feedback, guiding them to reflect on their thought process and correct misconceptions.
Incorporating Visual Aids: Some students benefit from visual representations of data. Using graphs or charts alongside numerical data can help them see the relationship between different types of information and understand which figures to use in their calculations.
Clear Step-by-Step Instructions: Sometimes students struggle because the process feels overwhelming. Breaking down the steps to calculate a mean (e.g., identify the correct data set, sum the values, divide by the number of values) and providing examples before independent work can boost their confidence and reduce errors.
Moving Forward
Teaching foundational concepts like calculating the mean in a science context is essential for helping students develop the skills they’ll need in later years and in real-world problem-solving. However, it’s clear that without regular reinforcement and opportunities for cross-curricular practice, students can easily forget these skills or struggle to apply them when needed.
By focusing on cross-subject collaboration, frequent practice, and real-world applications, we can help students bridge the gap between theory and practice, ensuring they not only remember these key concepts but can also use them confidently across subjects. After all, the ability to analyze data effectively is a fundamental skill not only in science but in life.
